Kalamazoo Race Exhibit

Telling the Kalamazoo Community RACE Story

Telling the Kalamazoo Community RACE Story seeks to collect the depth and richness of local residents’ lived experiences with race and ethnicity. The goals of the project are to build awareness and appreciation among community members about the varied racial and ethnic experiences of those around them, and to provide young journalists with the opportunity to learn about diversity, community and their craft.

In the summer of 2010, a booklet of photos and interviews will be published through the support of the Kalamazoo Community Foundation. Video documentaries featuring select citizens will also be available in summer 2010.

The project is a community collaboration led by Donna Odom, president of the Southwest Michigan Black Heritage Society, and Sue Ellen Christian, associate professor of journalism at Western Michigan University.
