EMBRACING DIVERSE VOICES: African-American Art in the Collection of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts
October 3-November 29, 2009
This exhibition marks and celebrates the KIA’s efforts to build and share a significant body of works by African-American artists of regional and national renown with our community.
Over sixty works of art on view will include:
- Well-known area artists Al Harris, Murphy Darden, James M. Watkins, Maria Scott, and James Palmore
- Pioneering artists Robert Scott Duncanson and Henry Ossawa Tanner
- Leading 20th century artists such as Elizabeth Catlett, Hughie Lee-Smith, and Romare Bearden.
- Wonderful photographs by Gordon Parks, James Van Der Zee, and Ernest C. Withers
- Jacob Lawrence’s complete Legend of John Brown series

Guest Speaker: Dr. Susan Morris of Ferris State University teaches courses in Film, Philosophy, and Race and Gender issues and works with Ferris’ Jim Crow Museum.

Michigan Festival of Sacred Music: November 12-22

Appearing for the first time will be the Native American musical group, Southern Straight Singers; organist David Briggs; CUBE; Common Chords, a group that celebrates the common roots of Muslim and Jewish music; The Afro-Semitic Experience, a cross-cultural band that is “actively creating an artistic response to anti-Semitism and Racism of all forms;” Tibetan singer, Techung; and the Klezmer band Hot Pstromi. Returning are Bob Rowe, Ted & Company with Ken Medema, Rohan Krishnamurthy, and Yale Strom and Elizabeth Schwartz.
